I comment principally on the Synape Series, as for me they encapsulate the rest of the works in style and intent.
From a technical point of view, the masterful use of texture combined with the use of scattered layers of metallic surfacing, forms a lively impression of the texture and complexities of space as it is being revealed by new discoveries daily. I feel myself drawn into these works in a very personal way.
There is a dark luminosity coming through which not only encapsulates the feel of outer space, but reflects also into inner space; I feel the link between two universes, the outer and the inner. This combination of texture and energetic form does it for me. The fulsome use of texture and dark tones, lends these works a heart-stilling intensity. One feels oneself to be on the edge. I see the Aotearoa Space Abstraction series as complementary to the Synapse works. They bring in an immediacy, wherein the artist seems to have turned his vision into the more inner realms, macro aligning with micro, and with hints of mathematical and quantum principles, even beyond. These draw together into the formation of more immediate realities.
