Judith Lane-Ewing - Militia Brides
Reflecting Gender Issue Politics
Over the years Judith has developed a number of successful themes in her work.

Militia Brides reflect the gender issue politics during the 1800s migration period to New Zealand. A portrait of her great grandfather in a militia uniform initially inspired these paintings. Judith feels that the women who accompanied their husbands to these foreign shores should be recognized. She paints these women in military jackets and bridal gowns, referring to the strength and support they provided to their husband and family. Silver Jacket and Falcon, The Matriarch, The Voyage are works in this series.
